Halp, I broke it

Galaxy Book 12

Remember these things? It's still one of my favorite tablets to use.

Mine has been sitting in a drawer for a bit, and I attempted to charge it up a year ago. But it wouldn't get past 0% so I just thought it was a lost cause.

I was somewhat tempted to take a heat gun and swap in a new battery, or at the very least take out the SSD to get my files.

However, last night I got it to recharge. What was different this time, was I detached the keyboard (perhaps it had just enough power draw to prevent charging) and it is really cold temperature-wise here. So either one of the other, or perhaps both got it over the charging threshold.

Anyway super happy, what's old is new...

I understand your situation. I was in a similar spot when I was freelancing doing novel editing stuff for authors. Stuck on Windows using Word. I had tried for a year to get it to work OK on a Mac, and I briefly tried Linux as well, but it took twice as long to do things and was more of a pain on macOS and three times the time and pain on Linux if not 4x (Open Office 15 yrs ago was a cluster-fart).

Retirement meant freedom from being a slave to MS products. 😸

Surface Pro 3 battery issue

Before you start yelling that I’ve lost my marbles, I’m very well aware of the situation.

So, I have a SP3 that gets two digit miles under the hood during a year. I mainly use it to administer my e-books and I have some software on it that lets me borrow books from my local library back in Sweden. As you might imagine, getting my hands on Swedish books in Japan is a quest for the insane. Once in an eon I might also run Word in case I’m doing some serious editing since it has a bigger screen than my Surface Go. But that is it.

A little while ago when I was checking out books from my library in Sweden it just went poof, black screen and the backside was hot and I mean 🔥. Seems the battery is just out of juice, the anodes are gone, or…

Thanks to forum member Kuma for a smooth and trouble-free (well, almost trouble free) international transaction. In a first for me, Kuma wired the shipping cost (and the all-important $1 American!) by Western Union and I was able to pick up the cash at my local Walmart without any trouble. Interestingly, the only thing they asked me was to spell Kuma's name while hiding their computer screen. Once I did that, deal done!

Kuma, I hope that the Pro X serves you well...!

I Can Break Anything (and Usually Do)

As reported on Reddit, I cannot get the SP11 printing to my networked printer. Of course, no one else is reporting such an issue, and repeated removals and reinstalls always end up with the same result - can print test pages but anything sent to the printer from a program causes the printer to burp and then stop with no printer error or cue.

DO NOT TRY TO HELP FIX IT - this is for info only, as the SP11 will be going back to MS when I get back from Portland around the 1st of July.

Probably door number three - I'll be retired before MS or Apple give me anything close to what I want, and by then an iPad Pro will be all I need.

I almost had a gasp this morning when one of the outlets reported on an undisclosed iPadOS 18 feature which let's you force the Files App to save a folder locally - but then I found out it is folder by folder, so "saving" my "Client" folder does NOT save all the subfolders below it - HOW VERY APPLE - NO FINDER FOR YOU!
