Verizon has been saying they were going to kill off messenger plus for months. Something about implementing RCS. I think they're just trying to dump the staff and expense of maintenance on the app. Problem is, messenger plus would allow you to use it as a second messaging app for a different phone line than the line your current SIM card was attached to. Google messages does not provide that functionality.
