This seems to be a first: an official iPadOS update truly bricking iPads, to the point where Apple is handing out replacement devices to people who encounter this. The update has been 'pulled' as in: it's no long offered at the moment.

That was my second reaction to the news, after surprise that such a thing got through their process. Things happen and "Apple is handing out replacement devices to people who encounter this' is a response that can't really be improved upon, and which few if any other companies will do.
